On Saturday, 18th July we’ll be exhibiting at the Sedbergh Book Fair being held at the People’s Hall, Howgill Lane LA10 5DQ.
Around twelve dealers with a good range of secondhand, antiquarian and collectable books and ephemera. Café serving home-made refreshments.
The Hall has a small free car park, however if full then nearby pay and display car parks can be found in Joss Lane behind the Sedbergh Information Centre and at Loftus Hill near St. Andrew’s Church.

Sedbergh, the Cumbrian market town in the Yorkshire Dales, is England’s Book Town and many of the local shops have some book shelves to browse including Howgills Bookshop at the Information Centre where we have several shelves of books.

On Friday, 24th and Saturday, 25th July we’ll be exhibiting at the Ilkley Book Fair being held at King’s Hall, Station Road, Ilkley LS29 8HB.
Around twenty-five booksellers exhibiting for sale antiquarian, collectable and secondhand books, maps and ephemera.

The beautiful spa town of Ilkley lies on the River Wharfe in Wharfedale and is easily accessed via the A65 with the towns of Skipton and Otley close by.

Light shelf wear to box but is otherwise in excellent condition and complete with label. The book and dustwrapper in well preserved condition.
Overall, a particularly lovely, clean copy in box - very presentable indeed.

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass
by Lewis Carroll, illustrated by Mervyn Peake Bloomsbury, 2001
These classics of chldren's literature have had many editions published and many illustrators bringing their own interpretation. The Mervyn Peake illustrated editions were originally published in 1946 by Zephyr Books in softcover, and in 1954 by Allan Wingate as hardbacks. These new editions with introductions by Will Self and Zadie Smith were first published by Bloomsbury in 2001.
Hardback. Publisher's white cloth-effect papered boards with gilt title to spine; colour endpapers; sewn-in ribbon page marker. In dustwrappers which complement the endpapers colour. Presented in a slipcase with illustrations to front and rear panels plus spine. pp [i]-xvi, [xvii-xx], [1]-168, [169-172]; [i]-xvi, [xvii-xviii], [1]-200, [201-204], [2] blank; including b/w illustrations. Size: 7.5 x 5.25 inches approx. (130mm x 193mm).
Slipcase a little bumped to extremities; age-toning and dustiness; a little tight fitting for the books. Dustwrappers slightly sunned to spines but otherwise clean. Looking-Glass bumped to head of spine which corresponds to bump at upper corner of slipcase opening. Some pages show the creasing impression of the ribbon marker but otherwise pages are clean throughout.
Overall, showing shelf wear but otherwise nice, clean copies in a slipcase - appear unread.

Light wear and rubbing to covers, a little dusty and marked in places; sunned to spine and upper board. Pages clean throughout.
Overall, light wear but otherwise a nice, clean copy - surprisingly uncommon.

This edition from Faber which was originally published in 1947 has a cover design by Barnett Freedman; this copy being the second impression of the same year.
Hardback. Publisher's illustrated cloth with price-clipped dustwrapper. pp [2] blank, [i]-xxix [xxx], [1]-288, including b/w illustrations. Size: 9 x 6.5 inches approx. (230mm x 162mm).
Light wear and rubbing to dustwrapper; a little frayed and torn to top edge; some age-tanning. Cloth very clean and bright. Endpapers lightly foxed/spotted; some staining to fore-edge of page-block with slight encroachment onto page margins; pages age-toned but generally clean throughout; dusty to top edge of page-block.
Overall, showing light wear but otherwise a particularly well preserved and bright copy - very attractive indeed.

Dustwrapper dusty and age-toned; some creasing and light wear. Light shelfwear to spine and boards extremities. Offsetting to endpapers; occasional dustiness or foxing but pages generally clean throughout; edges of page-block dusty and age-toned.
Overall, light wear but otherwise a particularly nice, clean copy in dustwrapper - lovely indeed.

'A Country Story for Children' - a quite charming book, based on the author's childhood memories.*
Hardback. Pictorial boards in matching dustwrapper. [48]pp including colour illustrations. Size: 9.5 x 7 inches approx. (242mm x 181mm).
Dustwrapper rubbed and worn, some dustiness; wear to spine ends and corner tips with small loss; some short tears and wear to top edge; a repair with a strip of what appears to be archival tape to top edge of rear panel verso; a few short tears to bottom edge, especially to front flap fold; untidily price-clipped. Covers with light shelfwear to bottom edge but otherwise spine and boards are clean and bright. Endpapers foxed and spotted; an ownership inscription in ink to front free endpaper and a pencilled bookseller's code to rear paste-down; occasional scattered foxing but generally pages clean throughout.
Nonetheless, showing some wear commensurate with age and storage but otherwise a nice example - uncommon, and rather lovely.
