A brief look back over the month just gone, and what’s on the horizon…

Upcoming Exhibition: X Contemporary British Painting
This exhibition has been curated by award-winning artist Narbi Price and brings together the work of over 80 artists, including George Shaw, Andrew Grassie, HUSH, Biggs & Collings, alongside members of the Contemporary British Painting organisation and innovative emerging artists.

The exhibition explores the huge spectrum of what painting can be, from photorealism through gestural abstraction, tiny intimate studies to big bombastic works, paintings that come off the wall and paintings that make you question what you’re looking at.

Now That's What I Call Art 2
In April, Newcastle Contemporary Art hosted the second iteration of Now That's What I Call Art, a collaboration between System Gallery and Spaghetti Factory.

This show brought together seventy four artists from varying stages in their careers.
There was no selection process, with slots to exhibit booked by the artists on a first come first saved basis. The result is a collaboratively curated exhibition with something for everyone. Continuing on from the birth of Now That's What I Call Art last year, this exhibition was well received and we hope this won't be the last!

Conversation 1: The First Dance

On Thursday 20th April, the first of a three part series of events took place.
The First Dance invited both visible and invisible artists in the North East to come together and discuss how, why and when they make and show work.

Second Dance - Talking To The Visible

The second conversation took place on Thursday 4th May. This session focused on attitudes to thinking and making work, connecting with other artists and the impact of removing work from the studio to the gallery.

The final part, The Third Dance - Boogie On, will take place on Saturday 17th June.
How Do Artists Value Their Labour?

In this workshop held on April 27th at Newcastle Contemporary Art, pay and conditions of artists working in the UK were reflected on.
The session was informed by a talk given by Jessica Roper from The Artists Information Company, which provided an overview of the findings of the inquiry into the pay and conditions of artists working in the public sector, Structurally F-cked.
RePUBlic Window Box
Proudly sitting in the front window of our building on High Bridge, you will now find a wonderful window box on loan from RePUBlic Gallery.
The PUBlic Window micro-gallery is a venture to display art in unexpected or opportunistic spaces to increase public engagement with art. The travelling PUBlic windows are free standing and can be installed almost anywhere.

The artwork seen in the image below is by Tommy Keenan. Keep your eyes peeled, as the contents of the RePUBlic Window Box will be changing regularly!

The opening of X at Newcastle Contemporary Art will coincide with The Late Shows, and the gallery will be open until 11pm. There will be DJ sets by Bishop (founder of Opal Tapes), and Paul Smith, best known as the frontman of Maxïmo Park.

HBW Collage Community
Over the last few months, we at High Bridge Works have been hosting collage socials for our studio holders. This is an opportunity for building members to unwind at the end of the work day, get to know people from other studios, and create some wonderful weirdness in the process.

Below is just a small taste of the outcome of these events. You can see more from our collaborative collaging on our social media by clicking HERE >
Studio Holder Spotlight
Christian Wright
In March, digital media artist Christian Wright travelled to Milan to see a screening of his film Body Language at Milan Machinima Festival MMXXIII: Neither Artificial Nor Intelligent.

The film is primarily shot within the video game Dark Souls III, and tells the story of an epic encounter between two online players.
Focusing on how the combatants communicate via the limited body language afforded to them by the game design and the performative traditions of gaming communities, Christian combines the grandiosity of cinema with the janky awkwardness of gameplay.
