A brief look back over the month just gone, and what’s on the horizon…

Yoga Classes in the Gallery

Whilst between exhibitions, Newcastle Contemporary Art are putting the gallery to a new use as a venue for lunchtime yoga classes run by 88 and Yoga!

Sessions will run every Tuesday, 1 - 1.45pm for the rest of this year. The 45 minute length means they are perfect for fitting in to your work day! Tickets can be booked in advance by clicking here.

From Home

For the last couple of years, we have held a studio holder exhibition around Christmas time, encouraging our building and artist community to show off what they've been working on! This year we're doing things a little differently...

Instead of displaying their own work, we have asked our studio holders to contribute something from their own home. This could be a framed artwork, a poster, photograph, or just an interesting item! We can't wait to see the submissions we get.

From a Single Thread

Opening soon in the High Bridge Works reception, From a Single Thread is a group exhibition by The Newcastle University Textiles Forum organised by Kathryn Lunt and Alice Johnson. Contributing artists were given an identical square piece of calico fabric to transform in any way they wish.

This exhibition will run from November 26th - December 5th, with an opening preview on Tuesday 26th, 5 - 7pm.

Are You Coming Home?

This month the High Bridge Works reception hosted Are You Coming Home? A joint exhibition of paintings by Sophie Keys and Sandy Kiralawella.

The exhibition featured paintings on board and found materials, exploring themes of domestic space, personal history and queer identity.

Jesus Loves The Acid

Studio holder Bobzilla took over the High Bridge Works reception back in October with his solo exhibition Jesus Loves The Acid.

This exhibition was part of Succession of Repetitive Beats; a series of exhibitions hosted by Newcastle Contemporary Art.

David Wala

The High Bridge Works reception recently hosted an exhibition of music photography by studio holder David Wala.

We really enjoyed getting to show off David's work, some of which has been sitting in his studio for a long time waiting for it's moment to shine again!

High Bridge Works events

On December 3rd as part of 24 Doors High Bridge Works will be once again opening it's doors to the public, with history tours delivered by Peter Mackay-Jackson.

Tours times: 11am, 11.30am and 12pm.

Free to attend, tickets are limited so be sure to book your place here whilst you can!

Recently, we teamed up with Newcastle City Guides to offer tours of Greys Monument to our studio holders. We got a perfect day for it too, with sunny views from the top to reward us for tackling the spiral staircase inside.

In October, studio holders of High Bridge Works gathered for a Photo Walk, informally photographing points of interest around Newcastle city centre.

We love seeing our building community get creative together.

Chloe Rodham x Moving Parts Arts

This year, Chloe Rodham has been part of some fantastic projects with Moving Parts Arts for Newcastle Council’s Summer on the Square programme.

Chloe created two puppets - a mouse and a robot for Byker Puppet Trail Hunt, which were installed in Little’s News and AV Taylor on Shield’s Road.

She also created an 18-metre-long interactive cardboard model of Shield’s Road which was installed on Hadrian’s Square. The public were invited to add a person or tree to the model, play with the pool ball run or find some of the hidden histories included in the installation.

Studio Holder Spotlight

Bridge and Tunnel

Studio holders Bridge and Tunnel are busy working on the exciting upcoming film, Night And Day, an adaption of Virginia Woolf's 1919 romantic novel about the lives, loves and ambitions of two single young middle-class women challenging the expectations of a male-dominated society.

The film will star Hayley Bennett, with performances from Jack Whitehall, Lily Allen, Timothy Spall and more.
