The busy month of May is behind us now and summer stretches before us. You may have travel plans or plans to vacation at home. If you’re looking for a safe and welcoming wilderness experience, check out the Spring Creek Nature Trail. BLC’s 15-mile trail along Spring Creek provides a shady place to get outside even during our hot summer months. And if you are already one of the trail’s 75,000 annual users, consider directly supporting by making a gift to our Legacy Plank Program and we’ll install an engraved plank along the trail in your honor.
See you outside!

Leave Your legacy on the Spring Creek Nature Trail |
If you’re one of the 75,000 people who visit the Spring Creek Nature Trail each year, now is the time to help protect and sustain it. This 15-mile trail, cared for by Bayou Land Conservancy, is a rare and beautiful natural escape —but keeping it accessible and safe requires ongoing support, and funding is running low.
That’s where the Legacy Plank Program comes in. By joining, you directly support the maintenance of the trail and its more than 20 pedestrian bridges, which connect miles of scenic pathways from Creekside Park West to the Montgomery County Preserve. These bridges—and the trail itself—depend on the support of donors like you.
|
|
When you purchase a legacy plank, you’re not just making a donation—you’re leaving a lasting legacy. Your personalized plank will be placed on a bridge along the trail, visible to thousands of visitors each year. It’s a meaningful way to honor a loved one, celebrate your family, or showcase your business’s commitment to conservation and community.
The Spring Creek Nature Trail was built by the community, for the community. With your help, it can continue to offer future generations the chance to experience wilderness close to home. Join the Legacy Plank Program today to support one of the community’s favorite outdoor spaces.

Volunteers Needed for Invasive Removal! |
Join Bayou Land Conservancy’s Invasive Species Eradication Patrol (BISEP) on Saturday, June 13th at Arrowwood Preserve to remove invasive species! We’ll kick things off with a quick safety talk and a rundown on the plants we’re targeting. Then we’ll walk along natural trails to our work spots and get busy removing invasive plants to help the native wildlife thrive.

Volunteer Spotlight: A Decade of Trail Blazing & a New Horizon |
For over ten years, visitors exploring our local preserves have walked along paths, boardwalks, and bridges crafted by a dedicated group of volunteers known as the Bayou Land Conservancy Trail Crew. Led since its inception by founding volunteer John Stacy, this incredible group has passionately shaped the outdoor experiences of tens of thousands of community members.

Honoring a Decade of Leadership
This month, we are extending our deepest gratitude to John Stacy, who has made the decision to retire from his leadership role. Over the last decade, John’s leadership and tireless work ethic have helped guide the crew's efforts on the Spring Creek Nature Trail to construct or repair dozens of bridges, boardwalks and build over fifteen miles of trails, which are enjoyed by tens of thousands of visitors each month. The physical footprint he leaves behind on the land is a lasting legacy that will connect people to nature for generations to come. Thank you, John, for your extraordinary commitment!

Recent Triumphs on the Trails
The Trail Crew’s momentum has remained strong, with volunteers tackling vital infrastructure projects to keep our community connected. Some of their impressive recent completions include:
Trail re-route and creation of "Jeff's Bridge": Reroute of a trail section near Kuykendahl Road, and the creation of a new bridge for access across Spring Creek. "Death Canyon" Bridge Repair: Reinforcing and stabilizing support beams and replacing weathered boards on a heavily used section of trail. Peckinpaugh Preserve Boardwalk Creations: Building two major boardwalks over frequently inundated trail sections to ensure safe hiking during heavy seasonal rains. Rebuild of "Aram's Bridge" on MoCo Preserve: Removal and complete rebuild of a bridge over a seasonal drainage channel along the start of the Spring Creek Nature The South Trailhead Enhancements: Clearing visual paths for safety and enhanced access for all trail users at the start of the trail at Montgomery County Preserve. Continual maintenance of areas that routinely take on sand and debris each time we get even minor rain, such as "Don's Legos" which cross a drainage channel near the Flintridge Trailhead.

Looking Ahead: Summer Restructuring
Following John's transition, BLC is stepping in to take a more active role in the planning and administration of our trail maintenance efforts. We view this milestone as a wonderful opportunity to evolve the group for long-term sustainability. Over the summer months, BLC staff will be collaborating with past leadership, active volunteers, and our agency partners to develop a management framework that will set the crew up for continued success.
Our Continued Commitment
While we take this summer pause to retool and prepare for an official rollout ahead of the fall, our commitment to trail stewardship remains uninterrupted. BLC will continue to fully uphold all trail management responsibilities. If urgent maintenance needs arise over the next few months, we will quickly mobilize targeted volunteer pop-up crews to handle them.
Whether you are a donor who funds these paths, a partner agency working alongside us, a program attendee, or a volunteer who builds them, we thank you for being a part of the BLC community. Stay tuned for the next exciting chapter of the BLC Trail Crew!
