βHalloween is an artistβs holiday: costumes as sketches, pumpkins as sculptures, and shadows as paint.β ~ Unknown

After graduating with a BFA in Scientific Illustration in 2005, I worked in customer service and the food and beverage industry for two decades. I moved to Oak Harbor from Seattle when I married my husband, and after struggling unsuccessfully to find a fulfilling job, I was encouraged to pursue my art full time, so I jumped with both feet into the deep end. I am inspired by the works and watercolors of 18th & 19th century naturalists, as well as by the vibrant colors of children's books. I love to paint plants, animals, and most recently, the Navy jets that fly over my home. The Pacific Northwest has so many beautiful locations and majestic creatures, it's not hard to find something to create and bring out the joy of life. Recently, to add even more joy to my life, I've been painting dinosaurs and dragons in hopes that folks will enjoy these as well. Following are two recent pieces. Read More >>

"Sucia Island 80 MYA (Million Years Ago)" - Watercolor, 16" x 20"
|
This watercolor painting was inspired by a Sucia Island fossil hunting trip that I took with the Salish Sea School last May. When I heard that Washingtonβs only dinosaur fossil (Suciasaurus) had been found there, and being a huge dinosaur nerd, I was excited to see the site of its discovery. The landscape and colors reference my photos from the trip. Because Washington was underwater during the Mesozoic Era, I speculated that a semi-aquatic dinosaur species would be appropriate. The theropod is based on a Suchomimus, and the coloration is inspired by a Great Blue Heron becauseβ¦ why not?

"Draco Noctis: VP-4 and Skinny Dragonβ - Watercolor, 16x20
|
My husband, who is my muse, suggested the idea of painting Navy planes for our local Naval community. I love the dichotomy of pairing the plane with the effigy of the squadronβs logo. Creating the composition for the P8 Poseidon was complicated by the attacking stance of the Skinny Dragon logo and whether a western or eastern style dragon was more appropriate.

Working with clay is a form of meditation for me, and I move into the creation of each piece with only a loose idea of the end result. Thus, each piece is truly one of a kind, born of the inspiration I feel as it is formed. I have particularly enjoyed working with addition and subtraction in my work. Adding a textured handle, piping on decorative clay slip, or removing and shaping organic spaces in the basic bowl form each create a piece that can be both functional and worthy of display. I find that there is nothing quite like opening a kiln to reveal a completed body of work. Read More >>

Iβve been lucky enough to live on Whidbey Island since 1971 when I dropped out of a premed program in Wisconsin and became a part of this amazing community. After a career in nursing, I started taking art classes to relax and express creativity. Twenty years ago, I bought Casey's Crafts in Langley, and the staff was kind enough to train this newbie in retail. Most recently I have been learning about oil painting from Cary Jurriaans at Whidbey Island Fine Art Studio. My friends at Artists of South Whidbey and the Sketchers group also offer support and encouragement. My efforts have resulted in some sales and for that I am grateful. Iβm hoping to start painting more of our amazing landscapes. Did I say how lucky I am to live here? Read More>>
