Summertime is just getting started, but almost 1,700 kids (and 747 volunteers) have already signed up for soccer this fall. There will be waitlists for our fun, family-driven league—register to play (and volunteer) today.
Soccer starts very soon for the high school-aged kids in Upper Division (UD)—so register right away. Teams have to be formed by August 1, so UD can finish before high schools start their soccer programs. For those of you new to UD, here’s how it works:
When you register your child for UD, feel free to add a comment if you prefer one of the two 16U options.
July and August are packed with training opportunities for coaches and refs:
Coach Classes
Referee Classes
**Region 13 hosted class
More coach and referee classes will be added to the schedule. Please go to ayso13.org/aysou to register and to view the most current listing of classes! Having trouble finding a class or registering? Check out the instructions in our Volunteer FAQs.
This month, we celebrate our Division Coach Administrators, or DCAs for short. They have already been hard at work this summer coordinating with volunteer coaches, referees, team managers, and laying the groundwork for team formation and a successful soccer league. After soccer kicks off in the fall, DCAs provide guidance and support for all the coaches in their respective divisions. It’s a HUGE job that’s essential for teams of the youngest players in 6U through to teens in 19U. Join us in thanking the fabulous crew of DCA’s: Suset Chaney (G8U), Mary Cholko (B6U), Frank Garibaldo (G14U), Azeem Khaja (B14U), Brandi Lane (UD), Jonathan Lui (G6U), Luke Powers (B10U), Lauren Stevenson (B6U), Gus Razo (G10U), Tona Rodriguez (B8U), Nicole Rowley (G7U), Samir Singh (B12U), and Andy Thompson (G12U). If you haven’t met your child’s DCA, feel free to reach out with questions—and a big thank you to them!
School Partners
Can you help connect soccer families and strengthen relationships with local schools? The new School Liaison role involves a willingness to build bridges between Region 13 and fellow leaders at your kids’ school. If you’re a parent at a PUSD, LAUSD, LCF, charter, or private school playing in Region 13, write to rc@ayso13.org.
Child and Volunteer Protection Advocate (CVPA)
Are you interested in helping Region 13 provide a safe, fair, fun, and positive family environment for youth soccer? This CVPA helps oversee child and volunteer protection in the region, including monitoring safety training, answering questions via e-mail, and assisting with incident reports. Drop us a line at rc@ayso13.org to learn more about this volunteer opportunity.
Have a look at the open positions on the Region 13 Leadership page and reach out if you can help out.
Some important roles include:

Did you know that about 94% of women in executive positions have a background in sports? Ernst & Young also found that female former athletes earn an average of 7% more in annual wages than their non-athlete peers.
AYSO is partnering with the Women’s Coaching Alliance to start more young women on a sports coaching career. WCA has done this for a few years in the Bay Area, and now Region 13 is introducing it to LA.
This upcoming season, two young women will coach an AYSO team, guided by two adult mentors who attend all the practices and games. The coaches are also compensated for their time with a meaningful stipend. The program kicks off on August 17 with a day of leadership and coaching classes at the Claremont Colleges.
Mentors are also needed! Do you want to see more women in sport? Enough to put some effort behind it? Apply to be a mentor.
Region 13 soccer families will be recovering from the fire for years to come. If you need any replacement soccer gear, Region 13 can help. You can indicate that on your player registration form, or fill out the form at ayso13.org/eaton or reply to this email. AYSO can supply socks, shoes, shin guards, coach/referee gear, etc.
Need a soccer ball? Stop by the clubhouse at 711 W Woodbury, Unit E, Altadena. Take a ball or leave a ball in the bin outside the door.
As part of our fall season kickoff, on Saturday, August 30, Region 13 will go to Carson to watch the Galaxy vs FC Dallas at 7:30pm. Tickets are $20 each, and you can buy tickets for your family, or the whole team, at ayso13.org/tickets
Hi ⚽️ Families,
A common question during this time of recruiting volunteers is, “Why don’t you hire referees?” Could we charge just a little more for registration, and then not have to coax quite so many parents into becoming refs? Unfortunately, it’s just not possible. In just the competitive divisions at 10U and higher, each game requires three trained referees, and there are 50 games each week, meaning 150 referee positions to fill. There simply aren’t enough paid referees in Los Angeles to cover all our AYSO games.
Fortunately, it’s much easier than you might think. Recently, the referee rules changed for 10U and 12U, so that most of your refereeing will be as an Assistant Referee (AR) for your own kids’ games. You’ll be at those games anyway, right?
The only other ask is that each team provides a referee for the game before every one of your home games, which comes down to your team covering just five other games during the season. And, if your team has more than one referee, then you will only have to cover a very small number of games.
What’s more, it’s the best seat in the house from which to watch the game,, and who knows—you might just end up loving it.
—Patrick Shopbell, your volunteer RC and Referee
