Shake Your Beans
What happens when you mix a legendary snack with a love of rhythm? A taco tambourine, of course! The preschoolers thought outside the bun by painting paper plates to look like tortillas, folding them in half, and filling them with beans. The result was a one-of-a-kind instrument which is surely being enjoyed by the students and parents alike.

Apples Galore
On September 26th, the Kindergarteners celebrated Johnny Appleseed's Birthday! They learned about John Chapman, better known as Johnny Appleseed. Students brought various kinds of apples and spent time comparing and contrasting their sizes, shapes, colors, and tastes. They also compared the weight of the apples against other items. After voting for their favorite apple and filling in a graph to show the results, it was determined that red and yellow apples were the clear winners.

New Security for School Garden
Mrs. Ebert's first grade class is happy to report that an effigy has been erected to ward of any predatory birds. Affectionately known as "Scary Gary", this friendly scarecrow keeps watch over the mums, marigolds, coleuses, sweet potatoes, peanuts, Japanese Pagoda, and Purple Hearts that brighten our grammar school garden.

Second Grade Goes Old School
The second graders had a field trip to Cracker Country, which is a living history museum located on the Florida State Fairgrounds in Tampa. The museum, spanning four acres, includes 13 original structures built in Florida between 1870-1912. The buildings were brought from around the state and restored to represent different aspects of 19th century rural life.
What makes Cracker Country so memorable are the experiences that help transport the students to the pioneer days. They toured a general store and learned how to make rope and candles, washed clothes using a wooden washboard, and churned butter. They also experienced "school" using only slates and chalk for learning supplies and explored the relatively limited toy options available to pioneer children.

Third Graders Dig Science During the science unit on fossils, third grade students thoroughly enjoyed excavating toy dinosaurs embedded in clay blocks. Using chisels, hand lens, brushes, and safety goggles, students got a taste of the tedious, yet rewarding work of an archeologist, as they carefully dug for the hidden "fossils." According to one third grader, "The best part was when I first saw the foot!"

Sandal or Shoe?
In upper school biology, students practiced observation and classification by creating dichotomous keys in order to identify and retrieve their footwear. A dichotomous key is a tool scientists use to help determine the identity of an organism. The key is based on questions about characteristics which help to narrow down the choices.

From the Advisor's Desk
College Essays
Most students will need to write a strong essay for college, whether for part of the admission process or a scholarship application. This task can feel overwhelming, especially when it comes to deciding what to share and how to express it. Essays typically comprise one-third of the application process and allow students to showcase their personality. Students should focus on experiences or characteristics that highlight who they are and what matters to them. Colleges and scholarship organizations want to understand the students they are selecting to join their community or benefit from their legacy.
Finding a unique topic or mastering the art of presenting oneself positively can be challenging, so we're here to help. If your child needs assistance with essay guidance, brainstorming, or editing, please encourage them to visit the advisor for one-on-one support. Mrs. Nelson can be reached at knelson@sevenrivers.org.
