Make your workout a game, you'll be more consistent |
The December challenge to swim (in the pool) around Basswood Island or from Bayfield to Madeline Island has been a success with 24 swimmers tracking their laps swam in the pool. Through the month we’ve cheered on swimmers as they pushed themselves to swim a little bit further each day and come in more consistently to achieve their goal.
Brian was the first person to sign up for the Basswood swim challenge, when he came in on December 2nd, he told us that instead of skipping his workout he made it in specifically because he wanted to participate in the challenge.
In 2025 Brian completed his first Point to La Pointe in 2 hours and 1 minute and is diligently training for a significant time drop in 2026. One key tool to staying consistent while working out is to make the workout into a game, or “gamifying” it.

Things like the challenge to swim around Basswood Island this month create a fun way to track accomplishments and share tangible results with friends. Brain also finds that phone apps and Garmin/Fitbit/Strava groups offer fun challenges for even the smallest motivation to help on those days when it’s tough to show up. Brian suggests trying new activities and adjusting to the seasons with indoor or outdoor workouts to keep things novel and interesting.

Between hiking, trail running, paddling, ice fishing, and all the other outdoor sports in this region Brian is always finding ways to move his body. He works from home and especially loves getting outside or to the Rec Center to get away from sitting all day. For Brian, movement is medicine and helps control his chronic back, shoulder, and neck pain.
Even with all the physical and mental benefits that movement offers, it's not always easy to make it happen. There are days he just doesn’t feel like it or when everyday parts of life like appointments and being sick get in the way. All of us know the feeling of not wanting to workout, or feeling too busy to squeeze it in, or travel plans changing everything. The key to success is accepting that those things will happen and then getting back to the gym/pool/running trail as soon as possible without shame that you missed a few of your planned workouts.

Join us for the January Swim Challenge |
If you’d like to gamify your workout and participate in the January swim challenge from Bayfield to Red Cliff (3.5 miles) or around Oak Island (11.5 miles) you can jump in on January 1st.
Pick up your tracking sheet at the front desk. For everyone involved it’s been fun to check progress on the bulletin board, cheer on friends, and watch their progress toward their goal.

Swimmers, take your marks… GO!” These starting commands are more familiar than ever to our Bay Area Swim Team (BAST) as they surpass the 11th week of the swimming season. With only 6 more weeks to go till the championship meets, every swimmer is showing the hard work and dedication it takes to succeed in the lap lanes.
This season BAST is made up of 44 swimmers who are separated into 5 distinct age groups. We wish all our swimmers the best of luck as they begin the second half of their season. With 6 more meets to go we anticipate many strong swims, new Personal Records, and more ribbons!

New Sauna Heater, NuStep, and Treadmill |
Donations from several generous members have made it possible to upgrade our fitness equipment. Please help us maintain these new additions by following the safety and cleaning guidelines.
The new sauna heater is designed for 1 (one) ladle of water every 5 minutes. Over usage of water not only cool down the rocks, thus producing less steam but also allows water to pass through the rocks, over saturates the heating coils and ends up on the floor of the sauna.
Wear clean, indoor only shoes to keep sand and salt out of the treadmill belts and motors.
