Snow, Snow, Come This Way
Preschool students were met with a surprise snowfall as they came to class last week. The snow machine was a smashing success and fitting for a month that is bringing colder than normal temperatures to our area!

Kindergarten Snow Day Delights
On Friday, January 16th, the Kindergarten celebrated Snow Day. They went outside to play in the "snow" and dressed in winter clothing of coats, scarves, hats and mittens. Then they migrated indoors, to make snow angels, paint puffy snowmen, cut out paper snowflakes, and have a snowball fight! Finally, the Kindergartners ate snowman snacks while drinking hot chocolate. A little imagination goes a long way when it comes to enjoying a Floridian winter wonderland.

Second Grade Harvest
Mrs. Ebert's second graders were surprised to see a bountiful harvest of sweet potatoes from the school garden. As a reward for tending to the plants last fall, they made delicious kettle chips. This activity offered students a tangible experience with the seed-to-table food cycle, showing how God provides for our needs.

Students Thankful for a Generous Start
Mrs. Reese's second-grade students display the thank-you notes they have prepared for some of our We Believe donors. The campaign is off to a great start, which has excited and inspired the entire SRCS campus.

Students Engage in Mathematical Shoot-out
Mrs. Finley's third-grade students played Rock, Paper, Scissors, Math to practice their math facts. Once the students say the traditional chant (using the word "math" instead of "shoot"), both use their fingers to display a number count. The first person to say the product of the two numbers wins the match.

The Cold Hard Math Facts
In keeping with the cold front sweeping through Florida this week, third-grade students in Mrs. Wright's class practiced solving multiplication problems in a "multiplication snowball fight."

Biology Class Reaches for the Starfish
The ninth-grade biology class dissected sea stars as part of their study on echinoderms. One fun fact about starfish is that they do not have blood or a brain, rather they pump sea water through their body to get needed nutrients!

The Lunch Club
Mrs. DeBeer's students did not let an inside lunchtime spoil the day. Instead, they enjoyed their food alongside a competitive game of Uno.

International Students Enjoy Dinner Party Mrs. Donna Nelson recently hosted a dinner party for our international students. Zoe, Irene, Audrey, and Faith are from China. Amelia is from France, and Andrea is from Ecuador. The various accents and languages made for a very lively game of Bingo! The international student program offers a rich cultural exchange both for the students coming from abroad and the SRCS community.

From the Advisor's Desk
Q: What is one thing you wish more high school students knew about?
A: Job shadowing! Students often come to the advising office not knowing what they want to study in college or what career path they wish to pursue. My advice for this dilemma remains the same: try job shadowing. Job shadowing involves following a professional in a specific field for a few hours or a few days to gain a better understanding of their line of work. There really isn’t a faster way to get a snapshot of someone’s professional responsibilities. I’ve had plenty of students try shadowing and quickly realize whether they are headed in the right direction.
Q: How does a student get the opportunity to job shadow?
A: Students should start by asking their parents if they know anyone who works in that specific field, or they can ask around in their church and school community. Some students have had success by dropping in on a business or calling. At school, I can help students craft an initial email or help them prepare for a phone call to request an invitation. We usually find that people are very willing to spend a day with a student, answering questions and discussing their work. Interested? Please email me at knelson@sevenrivers.org
