Virtuoso Brazilian guitarist, percussionist, multi-instrumentalist and composer, Celso Machado, is considered one of the most versatile and exciting musicians and composers of Brazilian music around today. He is renowned as an imaginative and expressive performer of Brazilian folkloric and popular styles, interpreted with a range of his own influences – he’s especially fascinated by other world music traditions.

While Celso’s music is rooted in Brazilian rhythmic and melodic styles, he finds similarities between the music of southern Italy and northeast Brazil, the Egyptian Maqsoum and the Brazilian Baião rhythm, the Moroccan Gnawa rhythm and Afoxé and Samba. Celso incorporates these variations into his own sound; his own unique contribution to the ongoing evolution of Brazilian music.

Through our Inlet Music Series, we seek to provide a range of genres and sounds - and in our 2026-27 concert series, we hope you might consider a genre or two that you’ve never tried before:

Why?

  • It keeps life fresh and exciting: Hearing a completely new rhythm or an unfamiliar instrument wakes up our senses. It breaks up the routine of daily life and brings back that wonderful sense of discovery.
  • It unlocks new moods: Different styles of music capture different feelings. A genre you rarely listen to might be exactly what you need to find a moment of deep peace, a sudden burst of energy, or a fresh wave of inspiration.
  • It connects us to new stories: Every style of music is a window into a different culture, history, or community. Trying a new sound helps us understand our neighbours better and appreciate the beautiful variety in our world.
The next time you are looking for a unique experience, challenge yourself to a concert outside of your usual! You might just walk away with a brand-new favourite sound!

Music Around Town

Hannah Shira Naiman and Nathan Smith are award-winning Ontario folk musicians known for their authentic songwriting and pristine vocal harmonies. They will be at the SchmidtHaus in Anmore on Sunday,  November 1st.

Hannah (CFMA Traditional Singer of the Year) and Nathan (CFMA Composer of the Year with Vinta) are acclaimed songwriters and multi-instrumentalists who have each built strong national reputations over more than a decade in Canadian folk music.

Their collaboration began with double-bill performances in 2022, where Hannah’s clawhammer banjo seamlessly intertwined with Nathan’s fiddle and guitar work. What quickly became undeniable was the power of their vocal blend — precise, expressive, and deeply rooted in tradition. While their sound is often described as Appalachian old-time, each brings a distinct musical lineage. Nathan draws from extensive bluegrass and old-time experience, as well as his upbringing in Celtic and traditional Canadian fiddle music. He performs regularly with touring bluegrass band The Barrel Boys and acoustic trad quartet Vinta. Hannah’s songwriting is grounded in old-time Appalachian and English traditional music, crafting songs that retell personal stories through timeless themes and tropes — so convincingly traditional that they are often mistaken for century-old ballads.

Together, they create original music that is heartfelt, poignant, and occasionally raucous — rooted in deep respect for tradition while speaking through a contemporary lens. Within the folk community, their pairing has been met with palpable excitement, with presenters and fellow artists alike noting the rare chemistry and musical precision they bring to the stage.

“Hannah and Nathan are two of the finest acoustic musicians on the scene. Tight harmonies, inspired playing. Their deep love of traditional music shines in their original compositions. Truly worth a listen.”
— James Keelaghan (Artistic Director, Summerfolk)
