Children, It’s Spring

And this is the lady
Whom everyone loves,
Ms. Violet
in her purple gown

Or, on special occasions,
A dress the color
Of sunlight. She sits
In the mossy weeds and waits

To be noticed.
She loves dampness.
She loves attention.
She loves especially

To be picked by careful fingers,
Young fingers, entranced
By what has happened
To the world.

We, the older ones,
Call it Spring,
And we have been through it
Many times.

But there is still nothing
Like the children bringing home
Such happiness
In their small hands.

The Wonder of Numbers

Mrs. Kelly's students are the youngest mathematicians on campus! Whether practicing how to write numbers or equally distribute toy bears in baskets, the three-and four-year-olds are getting an early start on discovering the amazing order that God has given us through the world of math.
Third Graders Have a Blast in Science

After learning about magma, tectonic plates, and ash, the third grade science classes worked in groups to create volcanos using clay and empty soda bottles. Today was the big day to fill the bottles with baking soda and vinegar (and even some food coloring and sparkles) and wait for the eruptions of lava and enthusiasm from the students.

Let Your Words Be Few

During the unit on Feudal Japan, the 6th grade Social Studies classes engaged in a Haiku competition. Haiku is a Japanese form of poetry that utilizes only 17 syllables in 3 lines following the pattern 5,7, and 5. Typically, Haiku does not rhyme; its beauty is found in evoking powerful imagery and conveying clarity of thought with a frugal use of words. Below are the winning poems:

6A winner:
The Valley
Mountains split in two
Always yearning to be one
Cursed to be apart

6B winner:
    Forest
Deep roots grip the earth
Branches reach beyond the clouds
The forest endures

Overall winner:
  1st day of Autumn
The cool air is crisp
The leaves are turning auburn
Fall is among us

Lessons in Standing Up

After reading Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl  and The Hiding Place in English class, eighth-grade students visited The Florida Holocaust Museum. Here, history was visualized, pondered, and experienced through personalized tours from docents whose families experienced the horrors of the Holocaust. Students were encouraged to be "up-standers," not "by-standers" β€” to stand up for what is right, not merely stand by and watch as evil prevails.
