No business as usual

After millions of us marched in last month’s No Kings protests, what’s next? Organizers are calling for a general strike. This means no business as usual. No work, no school, and spending as little as possible. A general strike is a powerful statement of mass opposition to the actions of this administration, so mark your calendars: May 1 is the day. There’s a three-part message: ICE Out, Hands Off Our Vote, and Tax the Rich.

Read about the May 1 general strike at Common Dreams, then share with your people in whatever way works for you—social media, group texts, email, or regular old face-to-face conversation. You might want to mention that the nationwide strike follows the example of the economic blackout in Minnesota earlier this year.

While the May 1 strike is broad, it aims to particularly pressure companies that have profited from their complicity with ICE. Strikers not attending work and school will gather for protests of the Trump administration and ICE by targeting Hilton, Chevron and Citgo, and Enterprise rental cars. The more participation there is, the greater an impact the May 1 general strike will have. Consider canvassing small businesses in your community and seeing if they’re willing to act in solidarity, whether that’s putting a sign in their window, donating some of their May 1 proceeds, or closing altogether for the day.
