#FixTheAct Work Continues |
Here's where the government response falls short It doesn't match the urgency of the problem. Climate impacts are accelerating, but the response doesn't reflect that. It leaves big gaps in how we prepare for climate impacts, with no adaptation plans for: health care, local communities, ecosystems, emergency management, the built environment (homes, buildings, infrastructure) or aquaculture. It risks Tasmania's Net Zero status and keeps leaning on short-term forest offsets with no real, long-term cuts to climate pollution. It prioritises process over action - more paperwork, not enough on-the-ground change.
To be fair, there are glimmers of hope We're glad the government has reinstated a Climate Change Minister, as parliament requested - that's a good step. The government has flagged it might consider a new statutory body, though only after an unspecified "period of time." It plans to strengthen the existing Climate Change Reference Group.
What now We're calling on the government to go further and legislate the independent statutory body now. We're calling on parliament to demand real, sensible management of climate risks - and a genuine commitment to stop making the problem worse.
