We cannot be silent

Trump has escalated to genocidal threat: on April 7, he posted on social media that a “whole civilization will die tonight” if he didn’t get his way. (He backed off at the last minute.) While some of his allies are downplaying the threats, we cannot write this off as business as usual. If we want to be true to our values, we need to speak out and fight back.

Call Congress. Even some Republicans have already broken with Trump, and more will be receptive to pressure. On the Democratic side, Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer has indicated he’ll force a vote on using Congress’ war powers to restrain Trump. By calling your senators and your representative, you can keep the pressure on them to rein Trump in.

Pick a boycott and stick with it. Trump doesn’t care about humans, but he does care about the stock market. One of our most powerful tools is to commit to hurting bottom lines. Make your plans for May Day Strong. Commit to QuitGPT. If you’re a soccer fan, pick a nation with a team in the 2026 World Cup (including the USA) and email them and FIFA, urging a boycott of US games.

Share your concerns and do your part to shift norms in your community. It can be easy to underestimate the role we can play in helping to define the Overton window. Put up a yard sign opposing the war or attend a protest. Share this article with your group chat or write an op-ed in support of it about the duty of military personnel to refuse to follow unlawful orders. Continue to push against any normalization of Trump’s conduct and solidify opposition to the war.

Louis Jacobson and Amy Sherman have an explainer on the 25th amendment for PolitiFact:

"The 25th Amendment has a limited focus on whether a president is physically or mentally incapable of doing his job," Michael J. Gerhardt, a University of North Carolina law professor, told PolitiFact. "The 25th Amendment is not a remedy for misconduct that the president might have committed."

While technically the procedure could be invoked, the political reality is that it won't.
