All being well, and the creeks don't rise, we'll be exhibiting at five book fairs this month. |
On Sunday, 2nd August we’ll be exhibiting at the Ingleton Book Fair being held in the Ingleborough Community Centre, Ingleton LA6 3HG.
There will be around fourteen dealers with secondhand books on a wide variety of subjects including antiquarian and collectable, plus maps and ephemera. Café serving excellent home-made food.
A large pay-and-display car park adjacent.
Ingleton is located in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales on the A65 between Settle and Kirkby Lonsdale, and within easy reach of Lancaster via the A683 through Hornby.

Local attractions include the Ingleton Waterfalls, good walking around about Ingleborough and Gaping Gill, and a little further afield is the picturesque bleakness of Ribblehead Viaduct.

On Tuesday, 11th August we’ll be at the midweek Gargrave Book Fair being held in the Village Hall, West Street BD23 3RD.
Around seventeen dealers with a broad range of second-hand, antiquarian, out-of-print and collectable books and ephemera. Café serving excellent home-made food and parking nearby.

The pretty village of Gargrave is situated on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales, accessed by the A65 Kendal/Ilkley road and within easy reach of Skipton and Settle.

On Saturday, 15th August we’ll be exhibiting at the Bakewell Book Fair being held at the Agricultural Business Centre, Haddon Road DE45 1AH.
Open from 10am till 4pm there will be around twenty dealers with antiquarian, collectable and secondhand books and ephemera.
Crime novelist Martin Edwards, President of the Detection Club and consultant to the British Library Crime Classics, will be attending the fair as a guest.
A large car park onsite, with cafés and shops nearby.
The pretty market town of Bakewell lies on the banks of the River Wye in the Derbyshire Dales and is widely known for its local dessert delicacy of the Bakewell pudding. The town is easily accessed via the A6, is within close distance of Buxton and Matlock, and only a short distance away are the splendors of Chatsworth House.

A History of Japan
Conrad Totman The Folio Society, 2013
Originally published 2000 by Blackwell, with a second edition in 2005. This Folio Society edition with a foreword by Hugo Dobson was first published in 2013.
Hardbacks - two volumes. Publisher's blue cloth with gilt title and decoration to spines, gilt and black illustrations to upper boards; illustrated endpapers; head and tail bands. In a blue papered slipcase with printed illustration pasted to front panel. pp [i]-xlviii, [1]-426, [6] blank; [i]-xxxi [xxxii], [427]-890; including maps plus b/w and colour plates. Size: 10 x 7 inches approx. (252mm x 175mm).
Some bumping and shelf wear to slipcase. Volume II bumped to foot of spine - a visible wrinkle in the cloth, internally the pages are unaffected.
Overall, showing handling wear of a heavy set but otherwise remaining in nice, clean condition - appears unread.

Bennett's Handbook for Travellers in Norway With Through Routes to Sweden and Denmark

A rather nice guide for the traveller, lots of advertisements and a fold-out map of Norway. A three panel folded guide and plan to Christiania (1912) loosely inserted.
Hardback. Publisher's red cloth with gilt title to spine and upper board; blind rules decoration to margins of boards; original price of 2/6 blind stamped to upper board; sewn-in ribbon page marker. pp [i] [ii]-xiii [xiv], 1-256, [xv] xvi-lxxxiii, including four plans, plus fold-out map. Size: 7.25 x 5 inches approx. (186mm x 126mm).
Light sunning to spine. Title page a little foxed, with some offsetting due to inserted guide and a pencilled name to upper margin; the occasional corner crease and some dustiness but generally pages clean throughout; a short tear to fold-out map.
Overall, light wear but otherwise a nicely preserved copy - lovely indeed.

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
L. Frank Baum The Folio Society, second printing 2011
The classic children's fantasy tale about a young Kansas girl named Dorothy and her dog Toto was originally published in 1900 by George M. Hill. A best seller, Baum wrote a further thirteen titles in the Oz series of books. In 1939 it was adapted as the film musical starring Judy Garland as Dorothy.
This edition from Folio Society was first published 2010 with an introduction by Maria Tatar and illustrations by Sara Ogilvie; this copy here being a 2011 second printing.
Hardback. Yellow cloth spine with title in metallic blue-green, illustrated papered boards with illustration in blue-green, yellow, black, and white; yellow endpapers; head and tail bands. In a slipcase with illustrated papered sides and blue-green papered ends. pp [i-iv], v-xvi, [1-2], 3-182, [183-184] including b/w and colour illustrations. Size: 10 x 7.5 inches approx. (252mm x 190mm).
Prior to photographing and inspection this copy was still sealed in publisher's shrink-wrap.
Slipcase has a minor knock to one edge.
Overall, a nice, clean copy in unread condition - really quite lovely.

Originally published 2004 by Bloomsbury. This edition from Folio Society published 2024 with an introduction by Neil Gaiman and illustrations by Charles Vess.
This copy with the tipped-in illustrated slip signed by Susanna Clarke and Charles Vess; described by Folio Society as a "special collector's edition" of which there were 100 copies.
Hardbacks. Three volumes in publisher's black cloth with gilt title to spines and gilt title and illustration to upper boards; fold-out illustrated endpapers; head and tail bands. In a slipcase with illustrated cloth sides and black cloth ends. pp [i-iv], v-xiv, [xv-xvi], [1-4], 5-255 [256]; [i-iv], v-vii [viii], [258-260], 261-616; [i-iv], v-vii [viii], [617-620], 621-975 [976]; plus colour illustrations. Size: 9.5 x 6.5 inches approx. (240mm x 163mm).
Still has the protective paper sheets inserted between adjacent volumes.
In nice, clean condition - appears unread and really quite lovely.

The Wind in the Willows
by Kenneth Grahame, introduction by A. A. Milne Methuen & Co. Ltd, reprint 1956
This ever popular children's classic was originally published in 1908 with many subsequent editions and printings. The first illustrated edition by Arthur Rackham was published in 1940 by New York publishers The Limited Editions Club and contained sixteen colour illustrations. The first UK Rackham edition was published by Methuen in 1950 and contained twelve colour illustrations.
This copy here being a reprint of Methuen's 1951 edition and presented in a very nice half-leather binding by Zaehnsdorf of London.
Hardback. Green half-leather binding over pale green cloth boards; gilt title and decoration to spine, with raised bands; marbled endpapers, binder's ink stamp to lower margin of front free endpaper verso; head and tail bands; gilt to top edge of page-block. pp [4] blank leaves, [i-iv], v-xii, [1-2], 3-178, [4] blank leaves; including b/w illustrations plus 12 colour plates. Size: 9 x 6.25 inches approx. (232mm x 160mm).
Colour to spine sunned and becoming more brown than green - and accentuated by the lighting in the image. Foxing to endpapers and preliminaries; pages age tanned and with occasional light foxing but generally clean throughout.
Overall, showing light wear commensurate with age and being long term on the shelf but remains a lovely, clean copy - very handsome indeed.

Ivanhoe

Originally published in 1819 and one of Scott's most popular novels with many editions and printings. It was published in the extensive New Collins Classics series in 1953, this copy a 1968 printing.
Limp boards. Publisher's blue textured Rexine (or similiar) cloth with gilt title and decoration to spine; grey printed endpapers with repeated Collins Classics monogram design; tinted pale blue to top edge of page-block. 480pp including b/w porrait frontispiece. Size: 7.25 x 4.5 inches approx. (184mm x 115mm).
A lovely, fresh copy which appears unread - copies in this condition aren't as common as they used to be.
