Hostile policies won’t fix Britain’s asylum system |
|
This month, I was asked to contribute to a piece in The Tribune outlining my views on the proposed changes to the asylum system.
"For over a decade, successive governments have relied on increasingly hostile measures to signal control rather than deliver meaningful solutions. In the constant shift to the right, with politicians obsessed with statistics and ‘control’, we too often forget the real human stories — the tragedy, loss and pain behind every figure."
I fear we might be repeating the same mistakes. Only by building a robust system based on fairness, justice and compassion can we uphold the values our country claims to stand for.

It may seem a little soon, but fundraising can never come too early!
Once again, I'll be raising money for Homeless and Rootless at Christmas, a Sheffield-based project that supports people experiencing homelessness, rough sleeping, temporary accommodation, or social isolation, as well as anyone in need of warmth and company during the festive period.

Westminster Hall Debate: Carbon Budget Delivery Plan |
|
As COP30 continued in Brazil, I led a debate on climate action, pressing the Government on how we could help families cut their bills with insulation and heat pumps and invest further in community energy.
I also pressed Ministers to make the biggest polluters and frequent flyers pay their fair share, so the burden doesn’t fall on those already struggling.
Sheffield is already leading the way with projects like the Community Energy Hub and world-class research at our universities, and I’ll keep fighting for a climate plan that backs our city and builds a fairer future for everyone.

My work in Sheffield and Parliament |
|
Trinity Estates meeting
I co-chaired a meeting with Trinity Estates, a property management company that operates in Sheffield Central. Their service charges have almost doubled, their correspondence has been confusing and opaque, and my constituents have reported inadequate customer service.
We raised all of these concerns with them, which they have promised to address. If you are experiencing similar issues in leasehold properties, please contact my office.
|
Cage-free future for Britain's farmed animals
Thanks to my constituent Charlotte who came to Parliament to speak to me about creating a cage-free future for Britain’s farmed animals.
Living in cramped cages and often not even seeing daylight, animals deserve better. The EU is committed to banning caged farming and we shouldn’t fall behind.
|
Settlement goods drop-in
Following a report into how foreign support for settlement goods funds and legitimises Israel’s illegal settlement enterprise, I hosted a drop-in alongside Christian Aid, one of the signatory organisations, to discuss how we might mitigate this impact and to encourage other Parliamentarians to find a just solution to the end of military occupation.
|
Visit from University of Sheffield
As part of the Parliamentary Studies Module, students from The University of Sheffield visited Parliament this week, and I had a great opportunity to sit down with them and share some of my work as part of the APPGs for Universities and Students.
|
My letter to Yorkshire Water
In light of the burst at Cumberland Street and a repeated incident at Addy Street, I have written to Yorkshire Water asking for a detailed plan of action.
If you have been affected by Yorkshire Water’s poor performance, please get in touch with my office.
|
The Boaz Trust
The Boaz Trust launched its report on preventing homelessness among people with refugee status. I heard from two people who were supported out of homelessness on how we might meaningfully address solutions to a growing crisis.
|
Drop-in with Radiotherapy UK
Cancer doesn’t discriminate based on location or access to treatment; that Yorkshire and the Humber has a potential 6,213 people missing out on treatment is unacceptable. If you have experience of this, please contact my office.
|
University of Sheffield student surgery
At my second visit to students at the University of Sheffield this term, it was great to discuss your political priorities, from the rise of populism to housing, from digital ID to maintenance grants.
Please keep an eye out for my next student surgery, if you’d like to join!
|
Careers and Networking event
I really enjoyed being part of a careers and networking event for young people, where I shared my career journey and some of the lessons I’ve learned along the way. The event brought together a fantastic range of organisations and businesses, offering insight and inspiration to the next generation of leaders.
|
Diabetes and Hope Gala
At the Diabetes and Hope Gala, I heard stories of true hope! This is Bernie, who with the support of the NHS and her local community, took the brave step to change her lifestyle to the point that her diabetes will almost be in remission.
I also learned that 80% of children in South Yorkshire now have access to insulin pumps, and that Sheffield is leading work to tackle how deprivation affects diabetes prevalence. Greatly inspiring.

Rivelin Valley Allotment Society
Lovely to visit with Rivelin Valley Allotment Society, which offers wellbeing benefits and practical skills, all while strengthening our community by bringing people together.
The group has also suffered from anti-social behaviour. CCTV, a simple deterrent, is not currently allowed on public land. I will take this forward, as measures like this could save money and police time.
|
Homelessness funding
During my Big Conversation events, my constituents ranked homelessness among the most important issues facing the country, so I’m really pleased to see Sheffield City Council's work towards this, alongside securing funding from the Government to help rough sleepers. Helping vulnerable people is exactly why I became a politician.
|
Fireworks Impact Coalition
I’ve heard from many constituents about the distress caused by fireworks. The Fireworks Impact Coalition is right to call for tighter regulations. While fireworks can be a joyful way to celebrate, we must ensure they don’t come at the expense of animal welfare or people’s wellbeing.
|
Banning plastic wet wipes
Plastic wet wipes don’t just clog our drains, they add to an overwhelming environmental crisis, creating artificial islands of rubbish and harming our wildlife. The Government plans to ban them and I’ll be pressing for a clear timeline to make that happen.

A Shot in the Arm – Pharmacies Association
The Independent Pharmacies Association welcomed me to their event, Shot in the Arm, which aims to raise awareness of the benefits of vaccines and how we might improve access for vulnerable people.
I met a representative from Imaan Healthcare, who was there on behalf of Walkley and London Road Pharmacy, which provided a brilliant chance to see what else I can take forward in Parliament for community pharmacies.
|
Sheffield Wednesday enters administration
Thank you to Clive Betts, MP for Sheffield South East, for leading the Sheffield MPs through Chansiri's appalling treatment of Wednesday.
Now more than ever, the club needs our support, and as Sheffield MPs we will work together to help the club recover and rebuild.
|
The English Devolution and Empowerment Bill
I was happy to see the results of my efforts to defend local democracy and the committee system Sheffield voted for have been heeded.
I’m pleased Ministers have responded to the case we put forward, and I’ll continue working to ensure Sheffield’s governance reflects the needs and voices of our communities.
|
Leeds and Sheffield: Better Connected
I joined MPs and regional leaders to discuss how transforming rail links can drive growth and strengthen communities. Some great ideas were shared, which I’m keen to take forward. Connecting our cities means more opportunity.
|
The Renters' Rights Bill
At the end of last month, the Renters' Rights Bill became law. I was proud to back amendments that will cap upfront rent at one month and stop students being pushed into tenancy agreements too early.
|
Early Day Motion – Community Energy
I'm happy to see my Early Day Motion receiving so much support from the House. Community energy is a solution to the crisis that ensures constituents can buy their energy locally. Energy for the community, produced in the community. I’m looking forward to debating it with my colleagues.
|
Visit to Utilia Energy Group
An informative visit to Utilita Energy Group to see how they’re making a difference in both energy and the community. They provide face-to-face support for people struggling with energy bills, offer advice on energy efficiency, and volunteer their time to support local initiatives.
|
China's interference on academic research
Academic freedom is non-negotiable. We must protect UK research from foreign interference, including China, and ensure our universities remain independent, secure, and world-leading.
|
Together Women
I met staff and clients at Together Women, which supports women involved with the justice system across the North.
I heard powerful stories of homelessness and trauma and I’ve asked Sheffield City Council to reflect case studies like these in their trauma-informed approach to homelessness.
|
Individual Service Funds
At a drop-in on improving care, I heard from the University of Sheffield about their research into Individual Service Funds, direct payments that give people with learning disabilities greater control over their support. These tailored support packages empower individuals to shape care around their own needs and aspirations.
|
UCU strikes
I visited the picket line at Sheffield Hallam to hear from UCU members. They are striking at SHU and the University of Sheffield in response to staff cuts due to the immense financial pressure in higher education.
We all want the best for our city, for our students and for our universities, which sit at the heart of Sheffield, driving innovation, strengthening our culture and supporting our economy. I’ll continue pressing the Government for a better settlement for our universities.
|
Live Works
I visited Live Works at the University of Sheffield’s School of Architecture. They connect with the community to offer the design expertise of staff and students to benefit the city.
Are you a public sector or community organisation interested in collaborating with them? Get in contact with the lovely team at architecture-landscape@sheffield.ac.uk to see what they might be able to offer you.
|
Sheffield Hallam Legal Advice Centre
Sheffield Hallam's Legal Advice Centre offers a pro bono clinic where students, supervised by qualified solicitors, provide free legal advice to Hallam staff and students.
It was really encouraging to visit and learn more about how they’re supporting our community and students.
|
Cross-border hiring
Taxi drivers in my constituency are rightly concerned about the safety and employment risks of cross-border hiring.
I raised this with Minister Lillian Greenwood who assures me the upcoming changes will address the issue, with potential national minimum standards and placing licensing responsibilities with mayoral authorities.

My questions and debates in Parliament |

New Immigration Measures
Communities are divided by anti-refugee rhetoric pumped into our politics by the hatred of the few. The new proposals will add cost and pressure to an overstretched system that faces huge backlogs, aggravating our divisions, rather than mending them.
