“March is the month of expectation.” ~ Emily Dickinson

Wood has been essential to civilization. Its utility and beauty still call many of us. These pieces of tree were rescued on Whidbey Island and are a record of climate and time. As a carpenter, I’ve always hoarded wood & counted tree rings. I discovered the wood lathe in 1998. Woodturning is highly addictive and very immediate, combining precision with many surprises. Forms are developed on the lathe from green wood. Some are turned oversized, allowed to dry, then re-turned, sanded, and finished. Most pieces are turned to a finished thickness, cleaned up with hand scrapers, and allowed to dry and distort. For a food-safe finish, I use pure tung oil. My interest tends toward the useless, cracked, and decayed. The goal is to celebrate treeness.

Living on Whidbey Island, surrounded by my dogs and cat, has profoundly shaped my artistic journey. Watching and painting the bunnies of Langley and the gentle deer of Freeland remain among my greatest joys and favorite subjects. Through my art, I hope to share my deep love for the Pacific Northwest: its boats and ferries, lighthouses and beaches, birds and bunnies, horses (including horse racing and polo), sweeping island views, forests of towering trees, and the majestic mountains, several of which I climbed in my younger days. I care deeply about our forests and paint them with both admiration and hope that their beauty will be preserved for generations to come. With so much inspiration around me, I’ve learned to carry a camera nearly everywhere. There is always a special excitement in returning home and downloading my photographs, discovering the images I’ve captured and the stories they may become. I also love painting plein air, though the ever-changing light requires quick observation and decisive brushwork. Often, I begin a painting outdoors and later complete it in the quiet of my studio. Sumi painting holds a special place in my heart as well. Working on watercolor paper, I strive for simplicity and expressive clarity in my Chinese brush paintings. Each piece bears my Chinese stamp, which means “Happiness”, a sentiment I hope viewers feel when they experience my work. More >>

Artist Dave Somers is vital to our gallery, consistently ensuring everything runs smoothly. His remarkable ability to fix anything and his dedication to helping others, whether by covering shifts or tackling unexpected challenges, exemplify the spirit of collaboration we value. He also donates his time and talent creating and cutting wooden event keepsake ornaments, which he gifts to customers who visit the gallery on holidays. We are fortunate to have him on our team!
