Community Center Fundraising

The Town mailed a letter to all taxpayers last month announcing the start of the fundraising campaign's public phase. You can find the letter here and more information about the fundraising, including promotional videos and the latest updates, on the Town's website.

The Town is trying to raise as much money as possible to reduce the amount it has to borrow to finish the project. Voters at the 2025 Town Meeting authorized a loan of up to $3.5 million. Every dollar raised now is one dollar less that the Town has to borrow and pay back, with interest, later.

The Town is also looking for help with planning and organizing community events, identifying potential donors and grant opportunities, and helping pack and move the Town Office to its temporary space. Municipal Elections and Annual Town Meeting

Municipal elections this year will be held on Tuesday, June 9, along with state and congressional primaries. Polls will be open at the Town Office from 8am to 8pm.

The municipal ballot includes these candidates:

-- Tinsley Morrison, running for a one-year Select Board term (to complete Breanna Pinkham Bebb's term).

-- Molly Schauffler, running for re-election for a three-year Select Board term.

-- Mark Lynch, running for re-election for a three-year School Board term.

Information about the state and federal primary candidates is available on the State's Elections website.

The annual Town Meeting will be on Monday, June 15, at 6:30pm at the Drinkwater School.

Annual Roadside Cleanup, May 9

The Town's Climate Resilience Committee is hosting the fifth annual spring roadside cleanup on Saturday, May 9, from 8am to 12 noon, rain or shine. Come to the Town Office for trash bags, dump stickers, gloves, scones, bagels, and a cup of coffee before heading out to pick up litter along your favorite road! This year's clean-up is sponsored by Hammond Lumber, Hannaford's, The Scone Goddess, and Spark Bagel. Contact James Kossuth at administrator@northportmaine.org or 338-3819x6 with any questions.

Property Revaluation Update

The assessors have completed their roadside review and update of all the property values, and are working on incorporating sales data through the April 1 assessment date. The assessors expect to present their findings to the Select Board in June and notify taxpayers in July of their new property values.

Food Waste Composting Pilot Project

The Town recently won a grant from the State for a two-year pilot project to allow all residents to drop off food scraps at the ScrapDogs collection area at the Transfer Station. The program is free for residents, but it is drop-off only (finished compost is available for sale separately). The Town will provide counter-top collection bins and five-gallon ScrapDogs buckets to the first 75 residents who pledge to be active participants.

The goal is to save taxpayer money by reducing the amount of food waste that gets hauled away and landfilled with household trash.

Emerald Ash Borer Alert

Emerald Ash Borers have been found in Belfast, and all of Waldo County is under a quarantine. Please do not move firewood outside Waldo County. Please be on the lookout for these insects, and see the State's website for more information on how to identify and protect against Emerald Ash Borer infestation.

Upcoming Meetings

The Select Board will hold the following meetings in May:

-- Monday, May 11, a regular Select Board meeting and a public hearing on a proposed moratorium ordinance regarding RV campgrounds. That meeting will be at 6:15pm at the Drinkwater School. A copy of the proposed moratorium is available here.

-- Monday, May 18, a public hearing on a Community Development Block Grant application for Swans Island Blankets to purchase additional equipment. That hearing will be at 6:15pm at the Town Office.

-- Tuesday, May 26, a regular Select Board meeting at 6:15pm at the Town Office.
