Hi pal,
In honor of the spookiest month of them all, a financial wellness firm asked me about tips I had for facing and overcoming money fears, and I wanted to share my thoughts.
Fear is one of the most basic feelings a human being can experience. And for many of us, especially those with financial trauma, even when we are financially secure, we still have brief moments and flashes of fear. Sometimes the best way to deal with our money fears is to allow ourselves to sit with those feelings briefly. Sitting with our fear and honoring it for a moment is often all we need to do to move through it. Whenever I feel a financial fear creeping up, I take a deep breath and remind myself that at that moment, I am safe. It’s simple, and it sounds silly, but it’s one tool you have access to at any moment to help you deal with fear.
Try it the next time your financial fears pop up, and let me know how it works for you.
Your favorite finance friend,

1. 🤓 My Friend Found A Sugar Daddy. I Think He's A Scammer (Paco for Refinery 29) In this month’s Taking Stock, I’m discussing how to get through to a loved one who doesn't see that they're about to get scammed.

4. 👝 When Dasani Left Home (The New York Times) What happens when trying to escape poverty means separating from your family at 13?
5. 💰 Banking the Poor (Net Interest) “The more I got involved, the more I realized that credit given to women brought about changes faster than when given to men… Poor women had the vision to see further and were willing to work harder to get out of poverty because they suffered the most. The women paid more attention, prepared their children to have better lives, and were more consistent in their performance than men.”
6. 👨🏫 I’m a life coach, you’re a life coach: the rise of an unregulated industry (The Guardian) A critical peek into the life-coaching industry. Personally, I am a proponent of the ideas and concepts that most coaches use to help their clients; it’s all basically cognitive behavioral therapy. But the sales machine that is built around coaching can be misleading because they sell overnight success, when the reality is that most overnight success is ten years in the making.
7. 🤓 A bookkeeping thing: Signs It's Time to Switch Bookkeepers (HYG Original) Having a competent and knowledgeable bookkeeper could be the difference in steering your business to growth and success or letting it spiral out of control. While bookkeeping isn't fancy, it's vital for the success of any business. While finding a bookkeeper for creatives may seem like a straightforward process (and it often is), the person you hire may not work out.
8. 🎃 Zombie Barneys! The Genius of Spirit Halloween (Curbed) “Spirit itself has developed and nurtured a cult following. The store’s superfans, known as Haunters, obsessively discuss its animatronic creatures (many of which are six feet tall or more, sell for hundreds of dollars, and are sold with full-scale backstories attached) on Wiki pages and post videos of their visits and product reviews on YouTube, all of which drive sales and foot traffic. It’s not uncommon for people to visit the neighborhood Spirit multiple times during the holiday season or to go to different local stores to compare displays and products. When the store hosted a grand opening this July for its flagship in Egg Harbor, New Jersey, people traveled from around the country and camped out to be first to see the new products and displays. On the store’s Facebook fan site, one Haunter shared photos of his in-store marriage proposal.”
