A brief look back over the month just gone, and what’s on the horizon…

Next up at NCA

Stepney Western

The next exhibition to take place at Newcastle Contemporary Art will be Stepney Western, featuring a new film by Newcastle-based artist and documentary filmmaker Harry Lawson.

This experimental documentary was made over the past two years in collaboration with a group of young inner city horse riders from Stepney Bank Stables in Newcastle.

Accompanying the film will be a selection of photographs from the archival collections of Stepney Bank, Side Gallery and the Ouseburn Trust.

Deaf Rave

In March NCA are set to host Deaf Rave, an all-ages celebration of Deaf culture, community and creativity. Hosted by Surface Area Dance Theatre in collaboration with the Deaf Rave Collective, this event is set to be a fun and entertaining learning experience with ages 7+ and 12+ workshops from 2pm, and 18+ rave from 7pm.

Tickets are available on Eventbrite for the daytime events and the evening rave.

Yoga at NCA

Steph from 88 and Yoga continues to lead yoga in the gallery every Tuesday at Newcastle Contemporary Art. Sessions take place from 1pm - 1.45pm

Tickets can either be booked online, or you can pay in the gallery on the day.

PerHaps Now

Throughout January and February local performance troupe PerHaps Now have been in residence at Newcastle Contemporary Art.

Known for their use of unconventional props, intense physicality, absurd humour and clever wordplay, the troupe create visually arresting and thought provoking work.

The residency includes two public performances.

The first performance was of a piece of work originally performed in London as part of the inaugural Queer Performance MA show at Arts Admin.

Next performance will be on February 14th at 7pm and features brand new work developed during this residency! Tickets can be purchased here or on the door.

Stu Mel Wilson

Throughout February the ground floor of High Bridge Works will be filled with the work of Stuart Mel Wilson, a Gateshead-born artist celebrated for his thought-provoking large-scale drawings and installations.

The work delves into the absurdities of human perception, exploring the tension between meaning, interpretation and the natural world and crafting environments that offer a humorous yet profound reflection on the human experience.

In this exhibition, Wilson revisits some of his older works, reimagining and exploring how they work together in a location they were not designed for.

Finding a Path

The third of the exhibitions by Newcastle University students took place on the ground floor of High Bridge Works in January.

Finding a Path, the first solo exhibition by Lara McFarland presents recent work turning painting away from its 2D presentation and into its more sculptural 3D forms.

With hanging mobile structures comprised of her cut up paintings, the artist invites you to notice the canvas material itself and how the fabric folds and bends as the different sections hold the weight of each other.

The Stand Comedy Club

Our neighbours at The Stand have some cracking events lined up this month!

Thursday 13th February is their Anti Valentines Day Special. Come along to see a line up of five comedians discussing the joys and horrors of V-day as it looms.

Time Of The Month is set to take place on Tuesday 18th February. Join this iconic Newcastle sketch group as they share a mix of old favourites and new material.

Studio Holder Spotlight

NJ Mills Illustration

This year has seen several new creatives move into the building! One of which being Nicky Mills, an illustrator from Northumberland. Nicky specialises in children's picture books, with a particular love for creating anthropomorphised animal characters.
