EAGxNYC Picnic: Success!
This past Saturday, EA NYC hosted our largest event to date! 150 people came together at Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture for a day of discussion, food, and fun. Check out some of our favorite photos here. Volunteer with EA NYC
As the New York EA community grows, we’re creating new ways to get involved and support the group. If you’re interested in helping out with EA NYC events, outreach, or operations, you can fill out this interest form to let us know. We’re looking for anything from help getting snacks for events, to new board members, to everything in between! See a full list of ways to help on the form. Host EA NYC
We also can always use help finding well-priced venues! Private outdoor spaces and large, private indoor spaces are especially valuable. A wide variety of spaces will work - we’re looking for spaces that can fit anywhere from 15 to 150 people. If you know of or have connections with any venues, please do get in touch at info@effectivealtruism.nyc. Last chance to apply for EA Global
If you want to attend EA Global: London in person from October 29 through 31, you'll need to apply by 8:00 am UTC on Monday, October 11. They will have a virtual option as well for those not able to attend in person.

Arushi is extremely excited about the malaria vaccine that was just approved by the WHO yesterday! It's a big step in the fight against the disease, but will still need to be supplemented by interventions like insecticide treated bed nets as the vaccine is rolled out. Rocky has been reading—and occasionally crying over—the submissions to the EA Forum Creative Writing Contest. The contest closes October 29. If you're interested in workshopping your submission, shoot Rocky an email!

Reading Group: The Most Important Century |
Holden Karnofsky the co-CEO of Open Philanthropy and co-founder of GiveWell, recently published " The Most Important Century" - a series of blog posts in which he argues that "the 21st century could be the most important century ever for humanity, via the development of advanced AI systems that could dramatically speed up scientific and technological advancement, getting us more quickly than most people imagine to a deeply unfamiliar future". We will be discussing it this month - find it here, available in multiple formats. Make sure to join the #reading-group channel on the EA NYC Slack ( join here) to discuss throughout the month. Stick around since that's where we decide on the books for future months!

Community Spotlight: You! |
It was so wonderful to see so many of you at our very first EAGxNYC Picnic this past weekend! We’ve never done an event like this before, and we were so overwhelmed seeing the level of interest and the incredible energy at the event.
We're so grateful to have such a wonderful community, and we couldn't make these things happen without all of you!

“Overcoming poverty is not a gesture of charity. It is an act of justice. It is the protection of a fundamental human right, the right to dignity and a decent life.”
