Can you believe January is already behind us? We hit the ground running this year and accomplished so much—thank you for being part of the journey! In this email, we’ll share a quick recap of January’s highlights, what’s coming up this month, and a few other updates we’re excited to tell you about. Let’s dive in!

First open house was a massive success!

We were on winter break during the first week of January, so our open house happened during the second Friday of the month. Our biggest one yet! 🤯 The incredible turnout reminded us just how eager our community is to support and engage in mutual aid. Because we’re still onboarding new volunteers from January’s event, we’ve decided to reschedule our next Open House for March. This means there will be no Open House today, but stay tuned for more details about the March event!

We trained and learned at Haven Boxing 🥊

As community-oriented spaces, Collective Focus and Haven Boxing are committed to safety and radical inclusivity, and this training was a perfect reflection of those values. We learned how to properly gear up, throw punches, and stay safe in dangerous situations. It was empowering, educational, and a lot of fun! 💗😷 Stay tuned! We’re planning more trainings like this in 2025, and we can’t wait to share them with you!

Sound bath for the soul with Aura Olamide

We had a peaceful time during this guided sound bath by Aura Olamide Soleil at Mayday Space. Thanks to all the participants and organizers for showing up and spending a lovely evening with us!🧘🏽✨

We had our yearly work retreat at Mayday!

We gathered for two days at our annual retreat to plan and strategize for the year ahead. Our goal is to continue supporting our community through a diverse range of events, workshops, resources, and initiatives. We've mapped out some exciting ideas and a foundational roadmap for the upcoming months. There’s a lot to look forward to, and we’re excited to have even more cultural exchanges along the way!

Lunar New Year food distribution 2025!🐍

Thanks to all our committed volunteers and neighbors that showed up to support during our Lunar New Year food distribution! We had a great time sharing food and love to our community ❤️🐲

🥟 Dumpling Making Workshop 🥟

We celebrated Lunar New Year with a fun and informative dumpling making workshop led by Asnia Akhtar. She did an amazing job demonstrating various dumpling styles and sharing techniques for pleating. A special thank you to Kim for leading us in a prayer and to Pri for offering in-house ear seeds! The dumplings turned out absolutely delicious, we had vegan options and meat options!

We got a brand new fridge!

For a long time, we’ve been struggling with a broken fridge. Every time we’d repair it, it would break down again. We’d fix it, and the cycle would repeat! Despite the constant setbacks, it served us well, and we're so grateful for all it did for our community. Now, we’re retiring her and welcoming a new member into our fridge family, generously donated by the lovely Treacy. We can't thank her enough for her support – this will have a huge impact on our food justice efforts! A big shoutout to José, Mike, and George for their help during the installation! And remember that we have fridge finder app!

We have free printing for our community!

We are at capacity right now, so we aren't taking clothes until next week. If you need to donate clothes we suggest you go to Bushwick Ayuda Mutua or Mil Mundos.

Maternity Pantry this Sunday✨

Join us on Sunday, February 9, 2025, from 3-5 PM at 1046 Broadway, Brooklyn, NY, for another give back event in collaboration with Mothering Joy and Woven Wombs. There will be gently used maternity and children’s items (0-5T), breast pumps, bottles, blankets, books, information on healthcare support in English/Spanish and more—all available on a first-come, first-served basis! This is a beautiful opportunity to support growing families and connect them with community resources 🌹
