This month, Heidi M asks: As I was reading your answer to the person's question, you mentioned that you used to write paranormal romance. I have personally stayed away from it because it at first glance / thought it sounds dark and evil and really weird. Would you be able to explain in layman's terms what paranormal actually means? And is there such a thing as Christian paranormal fiction?
Pam's reply: Paranormal romance, also known as PNR, simply refers to stories that include elements like vampires, dragons, psychic abilities, or other supernatural happenings. The best examples would be books by Charlaine Harris and Laurell K. Hamilton to name a few. When you add romance into the mix, paranormal romance blends those supernatural elements with a central love story. The relationship is still the heart of the book—it just happens in a world where something “other” exists. That could mean one (or both) characters aren’t entirely human, or that they’re navigating forces beyond the natural world while falling in love.
At the beginning of my career, I wrote in the PNR genre for many years. And yes, there is such a thing as Christian or faith-based paranormal fiction. In those cases, the supernatural elements are usually grounded in a biblical worldview.
As for why I switched genres...
In 2012, I walked away from an active 3 book contract with no intention of returning. Writing those types of books no longer worked for me, but I didn't know why. After a seven-year break, I suddenly felt a strong call to begin writing Christian-based fiction. My time away from the business had reshaped not only what I wanted to write, but also the message I wanted to share through my stories. In other words, God shook Pam and said, “It’s time to do better.”
I hope that makes sense and answers your questions.
