Around fifteen dealers with a broad range of second-hand, antiquarian, out-of-print and collectable books and ephemera. Café serving excellent home-made food and parking nearby.

Originally published in the United States in the weekly abolitionist periodical The National Era over 1851-52 to popular acclaim and success, the book edition coming from the Boston publisher John P. Jewett and Company in 1852. In the United Kingdom the first authorised edition was published by London publishers Clarke and Company in 1852.

This copy published by Collins' Clear-Type Press in the early twentieth century and with illustrations by R. R. Russell [Robert Ramsey Russell, fl. 1876-1912].

Hardback. Publisher's green cloth with gilt and black title, and decorative coloured blocking illustration to spine and upper cover; illustrated endpapers; illustrated title page. 392pp plus colour title page and seven colour plates (including frontispiece). Size: 7.75 x 5.5 inches approx. (199mm x 139mm).

Cloth lightly rubbed to extremities; a little crushing to spine ends. Age-toning and light foxing to endpapers; prize label (dated 1912) pasted to first blank page; age-toning and light foxing to pages but generally very clean throughout; edges of page block tanned and dusty.

Overall, a particularly well preserved copy in lovely, clean condition - very presentable indeed.

W. Heaton Cooper

Kendal: Frank Peters Publishing, third edition 1983

Originally published 1960 by Frederick Warne, with a second edition being published in 1970 by The Heaton Cooper Studio. In the 1980s Frank Peters published a third edition of this work along with new editions of lakeland artist Wiiliam Heaton Cooper's (1903-1995) other books - The Hills of Lakeland (1938), Lakeland Portraits (1954), The Lakes (1966), plus also publishing his autobiography Mountain Painter (1984).

Note: Fifty copies of Heaton Cooper's autobiography Mountain Painter were also issued in a matching deluxe binding, numbered and signed. I am not aware of the other titles having had editions in this deluxe binding.

Hardback. Full brown leather binding with gilt title to spine, gilt title and decoration to upper board; marbled endpapers; signed and numbered to first blank; page-block with all edges gilt. Housed in original brown cloth coverd slipcase with brown papered lining. pp [1] limitation page, [i]-xiv, 1-237, [1] colophon, including b/w illustrations, plus sixteen colour plates. Size: 10 x 7.5 inches approx. (253mm x 193mm).

Light shelf wear to slipcase. A few minor blemishes to lower board which are inherent in the leather. A few minor marks to fore-edge gilt of page-block; a few spots of foxing to page edges otherwise very clean thoughout.

Overall, a lovely, clean copy - superb, a quite beautiful binding and very presentable.

London, Paris, New York: Raphael Tuck & Sons Ltd, [No Date] circa 1930

A volume in Tuck’s Golden Treasury Library series. Published in the 1920s/30s, titles were bound in red, green or blue cloth and accompanied with a dustwrapper. Editions and printings are difficult to date accurately without a helpful contemporary ownership inscription.

Note: The Mabel Lucie Attwell illustrated edition of The Water-Babies was first published by Raphael Tuck in 1915 with twelve colour plates. The Golden Treasury edition is in a smaller format and has six colour plates.

The publisher's catalogue bound in at the rear of the book, and also the rear panel of the dustwrapper, lists eight titles in this series. Raphael Tuck promotional material for 1928 state ten titles in the series, and for 1934 there are twenty-one titles.

Hardback. Publisher's red cloth with gilt title to spine and plate/title label to upper cover. In a white dustwrapper with colour illustration and black title to front panel, title in black to spine, and publisher's advertising to flaps and rear panel. pp [1]-279, [1], [8] publisher's catalogue, including b/w illustrations plus six colour plates. Size: 7.75 x 5.5 inches approx. (196mm x 134mm).

Dustwrapper torn and worn to upper and lower edges, with some small loss; a touch dusty/grubby; dustwrapper now in a removable paper-backed cellophane sleeve. Cloth very clean and bright, front label a little marked to gilt area; gilt bright to spine. Endpapers a touch foxed, some light offsetting; pencilled name to front free endpaper; scattered foxing but pages generally clean throughout; spotting to edges of page-block, dusty to top edge; one page torn and creased to lower corner, now repaired and strengthened with archival tape.

Overall, showing some light wear but otherwise a particularly nice, clean copy - quite lovely and very uncommon to find with a dustwrapper, albeit a little worn.
