Spanish Class Celebrates Dia de Reyes
January 6th is King's Day - Día de Reyes - in Spain and many other Spanish-speaking countries. January 6th, also known as Epiphany, is considered by tradition to be the day that the wise men brought baby Jesus their gifts. January 6th is a big celebration. It is a national holiday and, in many countries, this is the day that the "wise men" deliver gifts to children. In many Spanish-speaking countries, children will shine their shoes, leave out straw (or grass) and water for the wise men's camels, and go to sleep anticipating the arrival of the wise men.
A Roscón de Reyes (as it is called in Spain, or Rosca de Reyes in many Latin American countries, and King Cake in the US) is a traditional dessert eaten on January 6th. Mrs. Eckart made one and hid a figurine of baby Jesus inside. Traditionally, the person who finds the figurine is crowned the king or queen of Christmas. In Spain, that person will also purchase the Roscón de Reyes the following year. Annalea Caballero found baby Jesus and is this year's Queen of Christmas.
