Like PRIZM, King Curtis was also born in Fort Worth in Texas. The saxophonist played on hits including Yakety Yak by the Coasters and Respect by Aretha Franklin, and I’ve included here his own 1967 single, Memphis Soul Stew. As well as the amazing saxophone playing you’d expect, this song showcases some excellent musicianship from other instruments too – but I’ll let the song’s lyrics introduce those!
Sophie B Hawkins had four songs in the UK Top 40 during the first half of the nineties. I’ve included 1994’s Right Beside You with its great eerie synth sounds, and 1992’s excellent Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover.
Finally for this section, something completely different - a song I stumbled upon quite by accident from Scottish folk singer Siobhan Miller. Go, Move, Shift was originally recorded by Ewan MacColl as The Moving-On Song, and I think it’s both beautiful and thought-provoking.
