In this newsletter, we are very excited to share a scientific paper published recently that includes this encouraging statement based on our data:
"Our findings suggest that there is still a reasonable probability (48%) that the species is still extant."
Extant is the direct opposite of extinct and this work came from a branch of statistics known as 'extinction modelling'. It has given us hope and we hope you share that hope! Read on for more about that story.
With that hope in mind, if you're getting out and about this Autumn, our message is to keep your eyes and ears peeled and phones and cameras ready to capture sights and sounds of unusual birds as you explore the native forests of the South and Stewart Islands. Recordings, photos and videos please!
And of course we share the latest most promising reports of possible encounters with a South Island kōkako, from the top to the bottom of the South Island.
In addition, we heard more about an older report, a beautiful description, and it's just what we still hope to hear, so we thought we'd share it.
