Who am I?šŸ™‡šŸ½ā€ā™€ļø

I am a singer, Songwriter, Composer studying Jazz and Pop vocals at a Conservatory in the Netherlands and want to use the knowledge Iā€™ve heavily studied for 3 years now, to help others!Ā

Ā

LetĀ“s Go, letĀ“s sing, letĀ“s begin!Ā

In this week edition

šŸ“šĀ Topic of the week: How to analyze your voice

Ā

šŸ“£ ā€žIf you want toĀ change or improveĀ something about your voice, you need toĀ listen to it first!Ā ā€œ -Ā Ineke Van Doorn

Ā

When my Conservatory teacher said that sentence I realized that in order toĀ become the owner of your voice, you need to analyze it and understand what you do and how it sounds, to know what you want to learn!

Ā

I haveĀ no idea who you are, how you sing and what you need,Ā and I was wondering,Ā

Ā

DOĀ YOUĀ KNOWĀ THAT?Ā šŸ‘€šŸ’

Ā

Have you everĀ properly listened to your voice?Ā - did you realize that the voice in your head sounds different than on a recording?Ā You might not even like how your voice sounds on a recordingā€¦. Well, thatā€™s actuallyĀ a universal human phenomenon, we hear our voices with different resonance andā€¦more to that another time.Ā

Ā

šŸ“ŒFirst Iā€™ll show you how you canĀ analyze your voice!Ā

Ā

Get yourself a pen and paper and write down what you thinkĀ are the strong and weak points of your voice!

Ā

Choose aĀ tune you already know

šŸ’”REMEMBER:Ā

DonĀ“t be too hard on yourself, critique is good, but can also demotivate you!Ā

Ā

1. The Range:Ā Are there notes that are too high/low? Was that piece may be sung by the other gender and isnā€™t in your key?Ā

āœ…Ā SOLUTION:Ā

Find out what your range isĀ and transpose the piece to your key.

Ā 2. Do you sound stressed while singing?Ā

šŸŽ„Ā You donā€™t know if you breathe high or low?Ā Check out theĀ video below,Ā I made for you!Ā

Ā

Ā 3. Do you always sing the same way?Ā

Everyone hasĀ habits!Ā Sometimes they are good but often they alsoĀ hold back.

Ā

LetĀ“s say your favorite song-genre would be ā€œballadsā€, you always sing in the time signature 6/8 and in a middle Range, because it is comfortable. It could also be the other way around, that you prefer ā€œUptempoā€ numbers in 4/4 and always sing in a higher/lower Range because thatĀ“sĀ where your voice sounds good.Ā

Ā

Either way is fine, and itĀ“sĀ good that you know where your voice feels comfortable, but you need to stepĀ out of your comfort zoneĀ and tryĀ new things! Try singing different styles, you arenĀ“t used to, try it lower and higher, and slower/faster. This will help yourĀ voice get more flexible, and get you started on exploring what your voice can do!Ā

You might be missing out on hidden Potential!!

Ā

šŸ’”TIPP:

Ā When you explore your voice, your voice gets more flexible! What can you do to explore?Ā

This list could be endlessā€¦Ā If you want to dive deeper into the topic, read the article in our blog.

Ā

šŸ¤øšŸ½ā€ā™€ļøExercise of the week: Lip Trill

šŸŽ„Ā You donā€™t know what that is?Ā Check out theĀ video below.

Ā

I usually do thatĀ exercise at the very beginning of my Warmup.Ā It activates the tongue and diaphragm and relaxes the area around the Mouthcavities. Ā

In a variation of this exercise you can also find out yourĀ voice breakĀ - the break between our Chest Voice - the voice we speak in, and the Falsetto Voice, high, more airy, maybe opera styli-ish sounding voice! Ā

Ā

šŸ“Œ I would always repeat exercises at least 3ļøāƒ£ Times!

šŸ“Œ Try out if movement helps you in your singing! šŸ¤¾ā€ā™‚ļø - it doesnā€™t always help, but often!Ā

šŸ“Œ Where do you breathe?šŸ’Ø And how can you find out if you breathe high, or low?Ā

šŸŽ„ Wanna know aĀ Trick to find outĀ where you breathe?Ā Check out theĀ Video!Ā
