Arushi is reading Everything for Everyone by Nathan Schneider, which chronicles the recent growth of worker co-ops for tech platforms, and lays out a vision of how they can function as a more equitable and fair alternative to our current landscape of exploitative tech monopolies - both for workers and the general public. Aaron has been thinking about land ownership and homeowning. On one hand, he recognizes the economic advantages of owning property. On the other hand, his inner Marxist bristles at the thought of becoming a landlord. Watch this video from Philosophy Tube and hit him up on Slack if you'd like to talk about it!

This month, we'll be reading The Life You Can Save, by Peter Singer. It's a foundational book in EA, and the recently released 10th anniversary edition celebrates the amazing strides that have been made in global health & development within the last decade! The book can be found online for free at www.thelifeyoucansave.org/the-book, and the audiobook version has awesome guest narrators like Kristen Bell and Stephen Fry! 😍 We'll be discussing the book on January 25th at 7pm, and you can add yourself to the #reading-group channel on Slack to join the club!

"Halfway through college, I started questioning my plans to become a conservation biologist. Animal Liberation convinced me to take animals’ suffering even more seriously than I had before. The Life You Can Save convinced me I had an obligation not just to help, but to help as much as I could. Over the next few years, I started donating 10% of my income to highly effective charities, gradually cutting animal products out of my diet, and looking for ways to do the most good with my career. The books gave me the ideas, but the people I met through EA gave me the practical tips and social support I needed to actually follow through. Now I work for Wild Animal Initiative. We’re focused on establishing an academic field devoted to finding ways to improve the welfare of wild animals (as distinct from conserving their species or habitat). This year, we became the first wildlife nonprofit ever recognized as a Top Charity by Animal Charity Evaluators."
