Are there ways to help the PTSA that don't require a huge time commitment?Answer: YES! There are many ways to help! Many PTSA volunteers, in addition to being wonderful parents, have full-time and part-time jobs outside the home. We encourage volunteerism in any capacity to stay connected with your students, with the school and to help you grow! In the RMS PTSA, volunteer positions come in many different flavors and sizes that are amenable to the many different families that make up our community.First and foremost, parents/guardians do not have to volunteer the entire school year at all! Many PTSA positions are single-event-based. They only happen for a brief period of time or even just a day, once a year. For example, International Night, 8th Grade Celebration, Hearing and Vision Screening, Picture Day, Student Directory etc. will only occur once during the school year. You can limit your volunteer hours for the time the event occurs. In addition, many of these events have groups or committees so you can share the responsibilities among many people. Also, most PTSA positions are completely flexible and really are what you make of it during the year. You decide how much and when you spend time for PTSA. For example, if you become a leader on the board level, you can decide how many fundraising events PTSA will host, or how many parent education events PTSA will have, or how membership drives there will be. Chairperson roles such as Facebook Chair allow you to work on your own time, at your own pace, in your own home! Not convinced yet? Read what some of our current 2020-2021 volunteers have to say!"My role as VP of Enrichment, allows me to work via email as I coordinate with the leaders of various clubs and enrichment programs. I also attend one Board Meeting per month."
"As a Reflections Chair, the PTSA provides step-by-step training and promotional materials. The work is mostly online. And Reflections is over in November, so it's a short-term responsibility."
"When I make a 2-hour volunteer pledge I get an email whenever extra hands are needed for a one-time activity like helping out with vision screening or filling water balloons for field day. If I can take the time off that day, I go for it."
"Any training and volunteer hours looks good on my resume!"
"I chose grants because meetings are difficult for me, and I can do it on my own time, and still know I am contributing to the school. Also, many roles in PTSA allow you to get to know the administration a little better, and this one even allows me to get the know the teachers too. This helps me feel like I am a part of my children’s educational experience."
"Serving on a financial review committee can take as little as two or three hours, once or twice a school year! PTSA requires three or more members to review our financial documents at mid-year in January and year-end in July."
This year's Nominating Committee is working diligently on putting together the 2021-2022 PTSA team right now! If you're interested in volunteering for a position, nominate yourself with our online RMS PTSA Nomination Form. If you don't know what you might want to do, please send a short email to nominations@rmsptsa.org to help you find out the best position for you. There is no absolutely no obligation or commitment to volunteer if you just have questions!Do you have a question for Question Corner? Submit it now! | |
