Other opportunities to highlight here:
Animal Advocacy Careers just launched a free online introductory animal advocacy course. This free workshop will walk you through some of the key considerations involved in working to reduce animal suffering and help you plan your next steps. The course was created for those who are new to animal advocacy - if that's not you, it would be great if you could share it with people you think may be interested!
Check out the course for more information and apply here. Application deadline: October 25th, 2020.
Separately, if you're working on a project (or in an EA NYC Ring 😎) that's tackling animal welfare, EA infrastructure, or the long-term future, there are some new funding opportunities available to you! Check out this page for more information but apply soon! The deadline is tomorrow! 🚨

Arushi is reading Losing Earth: The Decade We Almost Stopped Climate Change - a searing piece from Nathaniel Rich about the time in the 80s when we came to understand climate change and came *this* close, but ultimately failed, to implement a plan that would prevent it.
Aaron has been seriously looking into the health implications of Vitamin D deficiency vis a vis COVID-19. There is ample evidence to suggest that Vitamin D may greatly reduce the severity and rates of respiratory infections, and because most of the public is already Vitamin D-ficient anyway, there seems to be no downside to urging more folks to take supplements (provided they don't mistakenly believe that taking Vitamin D makes them somehow immune to SARS-CoV-2). Get in touch with Aaron on Facebook if you're interested in joining him and a few others working on a public health campaign!

Giving Tuesday is Coming Up
|
Facebook’s Giving Tuesday donation matching opportunity is fast approaching! Between 2018 and 2019, the effective altruism community, the EA Giving Tuesday team, and Rethink Charity helped direct $1 million in matching funds from Facebook to highly effective nonprofits, and the EA Giving Tuesday team is hoping to make this year another success. For updates and instructions on how to maximize the chance of getting your donations doubled, sign up at eagivingtuesday.org. A huge thank you to Avi Norowitz for helping lead this initiative!

Last month, we read Doing Good Better and had a fabulous discussion about effective advocacy, broadcasting donations, and animal welfare. This month, we'll be reading The Precipice by Toby Ord. Click on this cute little bookworm to join the group if you haven't already, and join us on October 28th for what is sure to be another lively discussion!

Meet Ashley! "I'm a finance attorney in a private practice by day. My behavioral scientist friends had told me about Effective Altruism and I found my community in the EA NYC group shortly after moving to New York. Even though Doing Good Better is admittedly still on my to-read list, I've made concrete changes in my life since joining EA NYC such as going vegan and doing work on pro bono legal work aligned with EA priorities (which I cannot talk about ). The EA NYC folks have also changed my views on other important things such as chocolate hummus (I think it’s overrated) and Staten Island (I think it’s underrated). I am looking forward to reading up on EA classics, attending more organized EA events, and connecting with you all in this nice New York fall weather and in the cyberspace!"

That's all for this month - take care and we'll see you soon!
Yours until nuclear winter, A&A
